For the span of one summer, I photographed my mother’s Canadian, country garden while she slept inside. I had never photographed at night before, so I felt I was stumbling through the unknown, blindly surrendering to fortune or accident. I experimented with lightning storms, the phases of moonlight, porchlight, with varied exposure times, never using flash, though sometimes holding a pocket flashlight to coax out the darkness. I used different cameras, analog, digital and pinhole during the long exposures, my finger on the shutter, tracking time. Meanwhile, my mother, a passionate lifelong gardener, slept, while her body battled terminal cancer. This series of photographs, sparsely punctuated with words, tells a subtle yet universal story contemplating love, loss and our place in the universe.
